Office Removals: Finding The Right Leader For The Job
If you own a business, or if you work for a business who are about to move, and there is need for someone to take the reigns, then it can be hard to know how to go about selecting a candidate. In many cases, no one wants the responsibility of the office removal, as there is rather a lot at stake!
For this reason, you will usually have to appoint someone against their will, which is a shame, because a willing worker will usually do a better job. If however, you choose the right person, then you will most likely find that they settle in to the role fairly happily, and it all works out fairly well in the end. Knowing who that person is, and how they fit such categories is a different story however, For a start, you need someone who is very good with organization. You will find that there are certain people who adapt well to planning and executing certain things, and it will always be the case that you need a certain degree of this seemingly natural ability in the person who is in charge of the office move.
There is a huge amount to sort through, from organizing the removals company, to ensuring that the office can be back to normal as quickly as possible, and such things can get pretty stressful very quickly if you are not careful. If you have a decent knowledge of the people on your staff, then you will probably already know who is the best at this sort of thing. You also need someone who can take time out form their day to day work for a little while, as the removal will take up a lot of time in which the candidate should be working.
Even before the office shuts down for the move itself, you need to have the removal well under way in terms of preparation, so it is not a case of designating someone to work on the removal whilst it is actually happening, but well before. With that in mind, you have a difficult decision to make; who is organized and level headed, but able to drop a little of their workload?
Unfortunately, these two qualities are not exactly conducive to each other, as the more organized the staff, the more busy and important they tend to be! You may need to offer an assistant to the person, as well as other incentives in order to get them away from their normal position and in to the role or removals co-ordinator. If you are finding it hard to find a single person for the job, then it may be a good idea to get a team sorted out. Having a person from each department of the office to have their say in the move can be easy, but you may need to head up the meetings, as disagreements will naturally happen.
A person from human resources will likely disagree with the way in which the IT department want things to go ahead, simply because their interests, as well as the impact that the process will have on their own work will be different over all. If you can strike the balance between getting the removal done safely and securely, as well as keeping your staff happy, then the job should be a good one. However, the fact of the matter is that the best person to keep both sides in mind is usually a staff member, so do work hard to find the right person for the job.
